Nepal's past Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, who had served for 5 years and was a part of many mass protests led that to the end of the king's authoritarian rule in the Himalayan nation, died Saturday. He died at 86

Close assistant and a member of Bal Krishna Khad parliament confirmed the death. Thousands of supporters and reporters gathered outside their daughter's house Koirala Kathmandu. Koirala had been there the week after several days in the hospital.

Had heart problems, high blood pressure and asthma and has been hospitalized several times over the past few months.

Koirala was the President of the Nepali Congress and led to mass street protests in 2006 that had forced King Gyanendra stop authoritarian rule, reinstate the parliament and appointed by the caretaker Prime Minister Koirala. Not long after that, the Koirala government stripped Gyanendra of all power, and the army commander.

Dethroned King Gyanendra, and was the centuries-old monarchy abolished may 2008. Shortly after Prime Minister Koirala stepped down that the new coalition government led by former communist rebels to power.

He was a key figure in the peace process but came to an end the 10-year communist insurgency.

Koirala spent seven years in prison in the 1960s to fight and attempt to gain a democratic government, he achieved this goal in 1990, and now is one of the most powerful forces in the country's turbulent political scene.

In 1991, he became Prime Minister Koirala, the first democratically elected government after a popular revolt ended absolute rule of the king.

Koirala was known as the predominant party loyalty, who are often void of internal dissatisfaction with an iron fist.

His fourth term came to an end in 2001, the government plagued by Maoist rebels, the bribery scandal and accusations of a palace massacre that wiped out most of the royal family.

The government has not taken part in the killings - including the king, queen and seven other members of the royal family died, apparently in the hands of the crown prince, who committed suicide - but the massacre, shocked and disgusted, Nepal, and is responsible for the security lapse was Koirala.
